There are many items today which you have to replace regularly – things like your cellphone, lightbulbs, even your toothbrush.  But when’s the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries – or the alarms themselves?  Actually, before you start the next paragraph, add 9V batteries to your shopping list (or whatever kind of batteries your smoke detectors take).  Do it now, before disaster strikes!

You might assume that just because you have smoke alarms in your home that you’re protected.  But have you tested your alarm recently?  If they’re hard to reach, use a stick, ruler, etc. to push the button.

We all have our areas of expertise, and sometimes it makes sense to hire a professional.  However, if a home project is simple enough to handle yourself, why not?  For those times when you’re going to “do it yourself,” you’ll need some basic tools.  Here’s a list of the essential tools for your next home improvement project!

drill

Drill and Drill Bits

Having a battery powered drill and driver is essential for a large number of tasks.  From hanging pictures to installing curtains, you’ll want to have a nice selection of drill bits and a pack of screw bits as well.  Make sure you get Phillips-head, slotted, and square-drive bits in a variety of sizes!

crescent

Adjustable Crescent Wrench

You won’t need a full set of wrenches, but having one or two adjustable wrenches will be useful, since the jaws can be adjusted to fit nuts and bolts of many sizes.  If you get a nicer crescent wrench, it will be self-ratcheting, meaning you won’t have to remove the wrench from the bolt or nut to tighten it.

Before you go gung-ho and start ripping out carpet and scraping up tile, take a step back and ask yourself a few key questions.  You’ll be glad you did, because you’ll dramatically increase your satisfaction in the end!

Room Usage

How many people will regularly use the room?  Will they use it a lot?  Will there be a lot of furniture?  Children definitely affect flooring choices.  So do pets.

What about moisture?  Is the floor near exterior doors, a pool entrance, or in a bathroom?  Will the floor need frequent cleaning?  How long do you expect your new floor to last before replacement?

Have you ever considered renovating your attic? Is it too full of “stuff” to even dream about it? Someday we’ll do a blog post on decluttering, but for right now, let’s pretend your attic is easily cleared for renovation (including some smartly designed storage!).

Now let’s dream. Do you want a hangout for the kids, a hangout *away* from the kids, a master suite, guest room, or home office? Depending on the layout of and access to your attic, you could one day be enjoying any of these options. But first, let’s talk about some basics:

Traditionally you had a "work triangle" which included your sink, range and refrigerator.  But today, this has evolved into a much more efficient and practical "work zone" concept. The kitchen used to be a one-person work area to a multi-purpose, multi-person cooking room, and your kitchen layout should adapt to these changing trends.

However, even with these new kitchen concepts, the tried and true kitchen layouts still work, but with modifications.

To get more storage space and fit new appliances, sometimes all it takes is replacing your current cabinets!

Planning Your New Kitchen Layout

Planning your kitchen can be complicated for so many reasons. It’s quite important to look at not just your cabinets, but the kitchen space as a whole.  Imagine how much larger the room would feel with no cabinets or appliances in it at all!
