1. Set a budget
Before you start planning, decide how much you want to spend. Do you want a low-, medium-, or high-end kitchen remodel? You may only want to spend $2,000, which will get you a simple paint-and-hardware upgrade to existing cabinets. Or for $5,000-10,000 you can replace your cabinets and give your kitchen a more complete refresh. Of course, if you want to expand your kitchen, install expensive countertops and luxury appliances, and redo the flooring you could spend as much a $50,000.
2. Work with the style of your house
Every house is built with a certain architectural style. A luxury kitchen may not fit well in a 1950’s style ranch house. Working with the design and layout of your house, rather than against it will give you the satisfaction you are remodeling your kitchen into a design and layout that will fit well in your existing house.
3. Keep the plumbing where it is (if possible!)
Sometimes rerouting plumbing is necessary for a kitchen remodel, but if you can avoid it, you can save a significant amount of cash. If you can keep your sink, dishwasher, oven, and stove where they are, you’ll often be better off.
4. Don’t pinch pennies on new hardware
It’s easy to think you can save by scrimping on knobs and handles, but these are the finishing touch that makes your kitchen shine! Choose knobs and pulls that complement the architectural style of your kitchen and house, and don’t cut any corners – you may wish you had chosen higher quality hardware! Also make sure you remove any damaged or painted-over knobs, handles or hinges and replace with shiny new ones! If you’re keeping existing cabinetry and the hinges were custom made, a professional may be able to strip the paint and polish the hardware for reuse.
